Distinguished animal breeding expert to lead faculty from January 2026, bringing decades of research excellence and international recognition.

By Maile Matsimela, Digital Editor at African Farming

Prof. Kennedy Dzama, a renowned academic pioneer in animal breeding, genetics and sustainable agriculture, has been appointed as the new Dean of the Faculty of AgriSciences at Stellenbosch University (SU). The distinguished professor will commence his leadership role on 1 January 2026, succeeding Prof. Danie Brink, who has served as Dean since 2017.

Academic Excellence and Leadership Experience

Currently serving as a Distinguished Professor and Vice-Dean for Research, Innovation and Postgraduate Studies, Dzama brings extensive experience in higher education leadership, research and innovation to his new role. Since joining SU in 2006, he has demonstrated exceptional leadership capabilities, serving as Head of the Department of Animal Sciences from 2013 to 2018 before transitioning to his current vice-dean position.

Dzama’s academic journey began with a BSc Agriculture (Hons) in Animal Science from the University of Zimbabwe, followed by MSc and PhD degrees in Animal Breeding and Genetics from Texas A&M University in the United States. His international experience includes senior academic positions at the University of Zimbabwe and the University of Fort Hare before joining Stellenbosch University.

Groundbreaking Research in African Animal Genetics

Prof. Dzama has gained international recognition for his pioneering research on African animal genetic resources, with particular expertise in parasite resistance, climate-resilient livestock systems and sustainable animal production. His groundbreaking work has significantly advanced understanding and conservation of African animal genetic resources, positioning him as a leading authority in the field.

The professor’s research impact extends beyond academia, with his work contributing to practical solutions for agricultural challenges across the African continent. His focus on climate resilience and sustainable production systems addresses critical issues facing modern agriculture, particularly in the context of climate change and food security.

Interdisciplinary Leadership and Global Partnerships

As leader of SU’s AgriSciences Interdisciplinary platform, Dzama has developed programmes in Food Systems and Sustainability that have gained recognition both nationally and internationally. The platform’s success is evidenced by prestigious collaborations and partnerships with world-renowned institutions including Wageningen University and Oxford University.

Throughout his career, Dzama has mentored more than 60 postgraduate students and published extensively in leading international journals. His contributions to academic programme development extend across Southern Africa, including the widely adopted Animal Breeding curriculum and the innovative Transdisciplinary Sustainable Agriculture programme.

National and International Advisory Roles

Prof. Dzama’s expertise is sought after by numerous national and international organisations. He has been invited to serve on various advisory panels, including the African Union InterAfrican Bureau on Animal Genetic Resources and the UN World Food Programme, SADC and its research and development wing, CCARDESA.

His current leadership roles include Chair of the Board of Governors of the African Wildlife Economy Institute and Chair of the Southern Africa Food Lab, reflecting his commitment to finding interdisciplinary solutions for agricultural and food system challenges across the continent.

Recognition and Awards

In recognition of his outstanding contributions to agricultural research and policy development across Southern Africa, Prof. Dzama received the prestigious South African Society of Animal Science’s Top Research Scientist Award in 2017. This accolade acknowledges his significant impact on shaping agricultural research and policy in the region.

Vision for the Future

Expressing his enthusiasm for the new role, Prof. Dzama stated: “I am deeply honoured and thrilled to serve as the new Dean of the Faculty of AgriSciences at Stellenbosch University, and I am committed to leading our faculty with vision, innovation and collaboration to achieve new heights of excellence in research, teaching and community impact, not only on the African continent but globally.”

University Leadership Endorsement

SU Rector and Vice-Chancellor Prof. Deresh Ramjugernath expressed confidence in Dzama’s appointment, highlighting his proven track record and vision for the faculty’s future.

“He has already left an indelible mark on SU through his outstanding scholarship and his dedicated service as Vice-Dean, Head of Department and programme leader,” said Prof. Ramjugernath. “Dzama’s pioneering research in animal breeding, genetics and sustainable agriculture has not only advanced knowledge globally but also positioned SU as a leader in addressing critical challenges of food security and climate resilience. Just as importantly, his mentorship of students and his ability to build collaborative networks reflect his deep commitment to the next generation of scientists.”
