On Thursday, police in the rural Bulwer district of KwaZulu-Natal were reportedly conducting a vehicle checkpoint operation when a bakkie loaded with 51 goats pulled up.
Constable Thenjiswa Ngcobo, a spokesperson for the KwaZulu-Natal police commissioner’s office, says the two occupants of the bakkie could not provide police officers with the required documentation related to the transportation of the goats.
“Initial investigation revealed the suspects (aged 36 and 40) were from Sandlwana in KwaZulu-Natal’s Bergville district and were going to sell the goats at Bulwer, Donnybrook and Elandskop.”
The suspects were arrested and charged with possession of suspected stolen property.
Alleged bribery attempt
Ngcobo adds that on Friday morning, two individuals arrived at the Bulwer Police Station where they allegedly offered the station commander a R5 000 bribe to release the goats and bakkie to them.
“The station commander refused the offer and, in turn, arrested both suspects (aged 38 and 47) for bribery and corruption.”
All four suspects will appear in the Bulwer Magistrate’s Court today (Monday, 1 September).
