A red Angus bull and his progeny made headlines at the 13th production auction of the Kroon Angus sellers’ group held on 2 September.
The bull ZEC 220028 Maverick of Dr Enslin Coetzee from Bothaville achieved a record price of R460 000. The buyer on the SwiftVee platform was Nico Steyn from the Guldenvrug Angus stud at Babsfontein, Gauteng.
The previous record for the Angus breed was in 2024 when a bull of Piet Delport and his son, Hendrik, of Hide-A-Way’s, Migdol, was sold to Mike Prinsloo of Nelspruit for R360 000. This bull, Hide-A-Way’s Wakeup PHD 210038, was the junior and grand champion bull, as well as the supreme Angus at the 2024 championship in Bloemfontein.

The auction was held on the farm Rosa of Johannes and Marijke Botha in the Viljoenskroon district, who are the other partners in the Kroon Angus sales group.
Dr Johan Kahts, the third partner of the group, withdrewn his Wenspan Angus from the auction in accordance with foot-and-mouth disease prevention measures.
The most expensive female animal at the auction, a pregnant heifer of Enslin, was ZEC 230024 Elizabeth, who is pregnant from the record-price bull Maverick. The buyer was Izelle van Rooyen of Borderland Cattle Company at Marquard.
The entire bull offering was sold for between R40 000 and R85 000. In addition to the record price of R460 000, five other bulls fetched R100 000 or more.
Successful Auction
The average price of the 26 stud bulls was R91 057,69, that of four stud cows with a calf was R30 875 and three stud heifers fetched an average of R19 000. A total of 19 commercial cows with a calf fetched an average of R28 552,63, a commercial cow R18 000 and 33 commercial heifers R16 636,36.
Danie Swanepoel of Karoo-Oche Vryburg, who presented the auction, says the good results were thanks to the wide interest it attracted. According to him, it was one of the most successful auctions they have presented in the second quarter. The turnover was more than R3,6 million.
