On 13 August the Memel district once again proved why it is known as one of South Africa’s top livestock breeding regions. Paul van Niekerk and Charl Theron of Boshoek Bovelders and Jaco Maritz of Maritz Bovelders held their annual bull auction on the farm Boshoek – an event bulls from top-quality mothers were offered, a true example of years of selective breeding and dedication.

The figures speak for themselves: The average price this year increased from R101 000 the previous year to R108 000 – a clear sign of buyers’ appreciation for quality. The auction offered something for everyone, from more affordable bulls to animals of excellent breeding stock for those investing in top bulls.
Boshoek sold the most expensive bull of the day, PVN220189 (lot 10), for an impressive R525 000 to John Faber and Walter Pretorius of Dundee.
According to John, the value of Boshoek Bovelder’s breeding stock has already been proven over the years in their own herd.
“We want to build on the strong foundation we have already laid. We are very excited to bring in this new genetic material, and we believe it will bring a great improvement, especially among our females.”
Maritz Bovelders’ most expensive bull, M18-016, was purchased for R300 000 by Deale Bovelders, KOJO Boerdery and Platberg Agri.

Breed perfect for South African conditions
Bovelders were specifically bred for the difficult and variable conditions in South Africa. They do well in hot, dry areas as well as in colder climates, making them ideal for diverse environments — from the Lowveld to the Free State and Northwest.
More than just an auction
Deon Stegmann of BKB Frankfort was full of praise: “It was a great privilege for us – a truly blessed day. These are people who have been breeding for over 60 years and the bulls speak for themselves.”
Auctioneer Jan Mostert, in collaboration with SwiftVEE, ran the auction smoothly and efficiently. SwiftVEE’s technology enabled farmers from all over the country to participate, like Herman Fouché from Potchefstroom was one of the buyers who gained access to these top animals thanks to the online platform.
