The Free State Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (FSDARD) has announced a crucial extension for agricultural funding applications, giving farmers across the province additional time to access vital financial support for the 2026/27 financial year.
The department has extended the closing date for funding applications under the Comprehensive Agricultural Support Programme (CASP) and Ilima/Letsema conditional grants until Friday, 17 October. This extension comes as a response to lower-than-expected application numbers across most districts in the province.
The department says preliminary feedback from all five districts shows that many potential applicants experienced delays in completing their applications and securing the required supporting documentation, prompting the department to provide this additional window of opportunity.
The funding programmes are designed to empower sustainable, inclusive and competitive agricultural enterprises throughout the Free State. For this funding cycle, the department has strategically prioritised several key commodities including livestock such as cattle, sheep, goats and pigs; grains and legumes including maize, sunflower and soya beans; fodder, vegetables, fruits, poultry for both broilers and layers; and niche commodities with a strong emphasis on value chain development.
These sectors were carefully selected for their potential to revive the provincial economy, strengthen food sovereignty and create sustainable employment opportunities. The funding initiative primarily targets black subsistence, smallholder and commercial farmers, aligning with the strategic priorities of the 7th Administration, which focus on accelerating inclusive growth, deepening transformation and building a capable, ethical and people-centred developmental state.

Leadership calls for Maximum Participation
The Free State MEC for Agriculture and Rural Development, Elzabe Rockman, has issued a call to action for farmers across the province, urging them to “take advantage of this opportunity to grow their operations and contribute to food security, job creation and economic transformation in the agricultural sector as a whole”. She further emphasised the importance of participation, calling on “all eligible and committed farmers to meet the new deadline and take part in shaping the future of agriculture in the Free State Province”.
Prospective applicants must meet several key eligibility requirements outlined in the application, including demonstrating access to land and water resources, presenting a comprehensive business plan and showing proof of market access. Farmers interested in applying are strongly encouraged to visit their nearest Departmental District Office for detailed information and guidance.
Application forms can be obtained and submitted at Department of Agriculture and Rural Development District and Ward Offices throughout the Free State and can also be downloaded from the department’s Facebook page. It’s important to note that electronic submissions will not be accepted, and all applications must be submitted physically to designated offices.
The department strongly advises all applicants to consult with their local extension office before submitting their applications to ensure applications are complete and meet all requirements. Upon successful submission, applicants will receive a reference number for tracking purposes.
