Females kicked dust in the eyes of rams who often fetch high prices at the national Boer goat auction in Bloemfontein on 16 October this year.

Bidding on the rams was a bit slow and the 33 stud rams that were sold achieved an average price of R31 575,76. In contrast, the average price of the 40 Boer goat stud ewes was R27 2925, that of Boer goat stud ewes with lambs R33 444,44 and the very high average price of the four Kalahari Red ewes with lambs was R97 500.
The most expensive Boer goat ram was lot 60 (267-240209) from the Lukas Burger Boer goat stud at Griekwastad. Jessica Phathela paid R140 000 on behalf of President Cyril Ramaphosa’s Ntaba Nyoni stud at Badplaas in Mpumalanga.

Ewes from the Conradie stud of Dirk and Dawid Louw of Helmeringhausen in southern Namibia were the most expensive goats at the auction. A Boer goat ewe (lot 199, 763-242249) fetched the highest price on of R150 000. She was sold to Gerrie Ferreira of Karoo Livestock Exports in Oudtshoorn.

They also sold the most expensive Kalahari Red ewe (lot 235, 269-230116) for R140 000 to the Ernst family of Bona Bona in the Northwest province.
The two previous lots, both Kalahari Red ewes from the Louws, fetched R110 00 and R100 00 respectively.

A total of 22 Boer goat herd ewes fetched an average of R11 772,73 and 10 Boer goat herd ewes with a lamb fetched an average of R20 900.
