Here is this week’s AMT Fresh Produce Outlook by Dr Johann van der Merwe, Director of AMT.
Potato prices climbed 7% to R46.34 per 10 kg, while tomatoes dropped sharply to R9.10 per kg and onions eased to R39.94 per 10 kg. Cabbages edged up 5%, but carrots and peppers both moved lower. Overall, the vegetable market remains under pressure, although month-end demand could bring some short-term support. Butternuts and pumpkins are still extremely scarce and expensive – up more than 170% year-on-year – but prices may start to normalise soon.
On the fruit side, it was a stronger week with bananas, apples, and oranges all trending higher, while avocados eased slightly. Most fruits should stay firm heading into year-end, though grapes and watermelons could soften as local supply picks up.
