African Farming editor, Lebogang Mashala, spoke to Minister of Agriculture John Steenhuisen about the Red Meat Industry Services (RMIS)’s at the launch of the platform’s second phase on Tuesday 4 November in Pretoria.
Steenhuisen has praised the RMIS for its innovative traceability technology. The enhanced digital system enables real-time data sharing across the entire red meat value chain, from farm to the abattoir.
Minister Steenhuisen highlighted the platform’s ability to capture, standardise and verify animal movement information, saying it represents a major leap forward for South Africa’s livestock industry.
By improving traceability, the RMIS platform strengthens food safety, boosts biosecurity, supports compliance with market standards, and enhances operational efficiency throughout the sector.
“This is the kind of digital transformation that will keep South Africa competitive and ensure consumer confidence in our food systems,” said Steenhuisen.
