Our first-ever AgriFund Connect Summit is taking place today and we were graced with a powerful keynote address by Mooketsa Ramasodi, Director-General of the Department of Agriculture, whose message set a bold and visionary tone for the day.
Speaking under the theme of resilience, science-driven agriculture and inclusive growth, the Ramasodi emphasised that South Africa’s food-system transformation must be rooted in both scientific innovation and social inclusion.
He reflected on outcomes from the G20 and African Union’s Malabo Declaration, reminding delegates that governments must commit at least 10% of national budgets to agriculture and that South Africa must accelerate its efforts in this regard. He highlighted the importance of agricultural scientists, women’s participation and innovation investments as the backbone of a resilient agricultural economy.
Ramasodi also called for a transparent, rule-based trade system, predictable market access for smallholders, and stronger collaboration across ecosystems – from policy and finance to research and markets. “No one exists in isolation; we must move together to solve the complex challenges of food security,” he stressed.
Ramasodi further unpacked initiatives such as blended finance models, comprehensive support programmes and technology adoption to boost productivity, adapt to climate change and empower farmers to own and control resources sustainably.
Closing on a personal note, he shared an image of a young farmer in the village, a symbol of the enduring spirit that drives South Africa’s agricultural future.
