This week’s AMT Fresh Produce Market Report by Dr Johann van der Merwe, Director of AMT.
Blueberry prices continue to struggle and are likely to remain under pressure for the rest of the year, with a recovery expected from mid-January through April. Stronger demand supported most vegetable markets this week, with potatoes jumping more than 10% to R49.38 despite higher volumes.
Butternuts, pumpkins, spinach and cabbages all posted solid gains, while tomatoes, onions and carrots came under pressure due to significant increases in market volumes.
On the fruit side, table grape prices dropped sharply by 20% after an 88% spike in volumes, with further declines expected. Citrus performed well, with oranges and naartjies leading the gains, while blueberries remain weak and slightly below last year’s levels.
Overall market demand is expected to remain firm this coming week, helping to stabilise prices.
