Design Biologix has been appointed as the sole and exclusive agent for Biogénesis Bagó’s foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) vaccine in South Africa, marking a significant milestone in the country’s efforts to combat one of the most economically devastating livestock diseases.
The appointment, which took effect immediately, positions Design Biologix to handle the complete importation, distribution and regulatory compliance processes for the internationally recognised FMD vaccines produced by the global animal health company Biogénesis Bagó.
Exclusive Partnership for Enhanced Disease Control
Under the new arrangement, Design Biologix will manage all aspects of the vaccine supply chain, including cold-chain logistics, regulatory compliance and coordination with government authorities. The partnership is designed to ensure reliable access to high-quality, strain-matched FMD vaccines across South Africa.

Karen Nel, Owner and Director of Design Biologix, emphasised the critical importance of coordinated vaccine deployment in the fight against FMD.
“With immediate effect, all communications and activities relating to Biogénesis Bagó and its FMD vaccine in South Africa must be channelled exclusively through Design Biologix to ensure regulatory integrity and coordinated execution,” Nel stated in announcing the partnership.
The exclusive arrangement underscores the need for streamlined vaccine distribution to maximise effectiveness in disease prevention and control efforts.

The strategic partnership comes at a crucial time for South Africa’s livestock sector, which contributes approximately R80 billion to the national economy.
The collaboration between Design Biologix and Biogénesis Bagó is expected to expand vaccination coverage nationwide, reduce disease transmission rates and protect farmer livelihoods across the country. The initiative directly supports South Africa’s goal of achieving “FMD-free with vaccination” status, which would help minimise trade disruptions and maintain access to international markets.
