The story of Matthew Ledwaba is a testament to how a simple act of compassion can grow into a lifeline for an entire village.
By Maphuti Mongatane, Business Development Manager at African Farming
In 2016, Matthew Ledwaba was transferred for work to Limpopo and he returned to the village where he was born: Bergzicht, Ga-Maraba. After settling back home, he quickly became aware of the daily struggles faced by many families in the community. Initially, he identified about 15 households that were battling to make ends meet.
Before planting a single seed, Matthew began buying groceries from his own pocket each month to support these families. His intention was simple: to ensure that no one around him went hungry and to uplift his community in a meaningful way.
From Good Intentions to a Thriving Farm
What started as a gesture of kindness soon evolved into something much bigger. Matthew began planting vegetables to supplement food for the families he supported and to donate produce to local schools. As his harvests increased, he found himself with surplus produce, which he began selling. This marked the beginning of a sustainable farming enterprise.
Over time, Matthew reinvested the income back into the village, expanding his operations and increasing his impact. Today, he produces a wide range of crops, including tomatoes, onions, sweet peppers, butternuts, squashes, cabbage and spinach. He practices rotational planting, carefully staggering different crops to maintain soil health, ensure consistent harvests and meet market demand throughout the year.

Connecting to Markets and Building Community Spaces
Matthew’s produce now reaches schools, feeding schemes, and retailers such as Freshmark, OK Foods, Boxer, NJ Fresh Produce, Goseame Fresh Produce Open Market and other markets across Limpopo. By linking his village to these markets, he has not only created a reliable income stream but also strengthened the local economy.
His vision extends beyond farming. Matthew has developed a large resort space in the village. It offers scenic views, venues for hosting events, and swimming pools where villagers can learn to swim – an invaluable resource for the community. He has also built accommodation facilities, offering further opportunities for community gatherings.

Creating Opportunities and Employment
One of the most remarkable aspects of Matthew’s journey is the scale of opportunity he has created within his own community. Through his farming operations and related projects, he has employed about 120 people from the village, providing sustainable livelihoods close to home. These opportunities have restored dignity, reduced the need for migration in search of work, and shown that rural communities can be powerful drivers of their own economic growth.

A Heart-Warming Legacy
Although challenges remain – including market access, logistics and rising costs – Matthew’s journey is a powerful reminder that farming is about far more than producing food. It is also about community, compassion and creating spaces of hope.
From the early days of buying groceries for a handful of struggling families to building a thriving farm that feeds schools, creates jobs for more than a hundred people and even providing a community swimming pool, Matthew Ledwaba’s journey shows what is possible when one person chooses to make a difference right where they are.
His story demonstrates that opportunities do not always need to come from outside. Sometimes, they are created at home, in our own villages, through determination, resourcefulness and care for others.
Matthew Ledwaba reminds us that farming can grow hope, opportunity and a brighter future for everyone around us – a truly heart-warming legacy.
