In a statement, the company said it remains active in the market for calves that comply with its procurement policy, while enforcing stringent biosecurity measures in line with national disease-control regulations.
FMD-free calves
Karan Beef confirmed that it continues to purchase calves that are free from FMD. However, the disease status of surrounding areas is taken into consideration when evaluating procurement opportunities from individual farms.

Calves previously affected by FMD
In accordance with the National Contingency Plan for the Control of an Outbreak of Foot and Mouth Disease in the FMD Free Zone, the company said it is also able to procure calves that have previously tested positive for FMD, subject to strict conditions.
The farm of origin must have an official Day Zero date confirmed in writing by the local State Veterinarian. All cattle movements must be conducted under a Red Cross Permit and may only proceed once approval has been granted by State Veterinarians at both the origin (seller) and destination (purchaser).
All animals must be individually identified and fully traceable. In addition, the farm of origin must be registered on the Red Meat Industry Services (RMIS) platform and have a valid Global Location Number (GLN).
Karan Beef advised producers whose farms are under quarantine but have not yet received a Day Zero date, or who have not been vaccinated, to contact the company to discuss possible options.
The company stressed that it operates under a strict biosecurity policy and reiterated that cattle showing any clinical signs of FMD will not be considered for procurement, regardless of the status of the animals or the farm.
