Consistent quality proved to be the deciding factor at the Van Hasselt and guest seller Angora veld ram auction, held at the Willowmore showgrounds on 15 January.
By Johan Norval, senior journalist at African Farming and Landbouweekblad
Jordi van Hasselt of Prince Albert and guest seller Benjohan Snijman of Vleikuil Angoras near Rietbron achieved a record average price of R17 963 for the 137 rams on offer, with a 100% sale rate.
Van Hasselt’s most expensive ram was sold for R80 000 to Jan and Jannie Lategan of Fairview Angoras, Aberdeen.
Petrie Maré, regional manager at House of Fibre, said Van Hasselt had been providing the rams with supplementary feeding on the veld for the past six months.
“It is no small task to develop rams of such a high standard and prepare them in excellent condition for an auction, especially when the group consists of more than 200 animals. This auction is one of the most sought-after events in the industry every year and this year was certainly no exception.”
The average prices were as follows:
- stud rams – R41 400
- selected herd rams – R25 400
- herd rams – R14 200
The auction was presented by House of Fibre and conducted by auctioneer Jakkie Nel.
