Demand for Dormer ewes, both commercial and stud, was particularly strong at the Johanri production auction of Johan and Anri Barnard on the farm Spioenkop near Lindley, Free State. Particularly high average prices, especially for the commercial ewes, were achieved.

According to Barnard, there was good interest at the new Bloekombos centre in Kroonstad and the auction on the SwiftVEE platform, in which buyers from the Western Cape and even elsewhere in Africa participated, was well supported. Sales of the guest sellers’ livestock also performed well.
The most expensive ram was sold for R35 000 to Dennis Staal of Bos Blanco near Kroonstad and Barnard’s ten SP rams achieved an average price of R21 000.
The average price of the six commercial Johanri rams was R15 833. The most expensive stud ewe was sold for R20 000 to Roelf Blignaut of Bergsig in the eastern Free State.
Barnard attributes the relatively high prices for his commercial ewes to their attractive appearance as downgraded stud animals.
The average price of his pregnant commercial ewes was R6 964, non-pregnant commercial ewes R6 000 and commercial ewes with lambs R8 000. His most expensive commercial ewe, which was scanned with triplets, was sold to a breeder from Africa for R9 000, while one with three lambs was sold to Alwyn Kleynhans for R8 000.
BKB Kroonstad hosted the auction on 7 February and Jan Mostert was the auctioneer.
