In this episode of AgriView, Wandile Sihlobo, chief economist of the Agricultural Business Chamber of South Africa (Agbiz), shares a special message following his appointment as Presidential Envoy for Agriculture and Land Reform, reflecting on the vital role agriculture can play in driving South Africa’s economic growth and rural renewal.
He emphasises that inclusive expansion in farming must support existing producers while opening meaningful pathways for new entrants – especially youth and women – through practical measures, such as releasing state-acquired land with title deeds.
Sihlobo outlines the sector’s pressing challenges, from biosecurity and export access to rural crime, infrastructure failures, and funding constraints, while reaffirming the long-term vision of the National Development Plan and the Agriculture & Agro-Processing Master Plan to unlock jobs across the value chain.
In his new role, he will focus on strengthening coordination between government, industry and stakeholders to expand trade, grow exports, and build a more competitive, inclusive agricultural economy. He also commits to continuing the conversation with audiences through AgriView and other platforms.
