This week’s AMT Fresh Produce Market Report by Dr Johann van der Merwe, Director of AMT.
Fresh produce markets showed significant price movements this week. Onion prices are rising sharply, potatoes remain under pressure due to higher volumes, and tomato prices could be preparing for a strong upward move.
Markets remain largely supply-driven, with higher volumes of potatoes, apples and peppers putting pressure on prices, while tighter supplies of onions, bananas and pumpkins support stronger prices.
As Easter approaches, demand could provide some support, although volatility is likely to remain high due to shifting production regions and weather impacts.
Dr Johann van der Merwe concludes this episode with a look at a new Sakata carrot cultivar.
