A Bonsmara bull carrying a single poena gene (heterozygous) achieved the highest price of R130 000 at the 21st production auction of the Leehan stud of Colleen Jacobs of Douglas.
By Johan Norval
She and her husband, Johan, farm, among other things, on the farm Lucky Valley with livestock and irrigated land used for cash crops.
Jacobs, who was runner-up in Voermol’s Cattle Farmer of the Year competition in 2017, has been an exceptional herd manager for the past 30 years and does not hesitate to make use of human medicines, such as antipyretics, when treating her animals.
This offering of mainly poena cattle can be regarded as a coming of age for her stud.
The stud’s next production auction will take place on 21 August this year.
Izak Cronjé of the Leeuwbult stud on the farm Whitfield in the Theunissen district bought the most expensive bull, JG 230176. Cronjé also purchased another bull from three exceptional dam lines, JG 220504, for R110 000 on the SwiftVEE platform. He operates, among other things, a Phase C growth test station to determine his herd’s breeding values for growth with greater accuracy.
Several breeders bought more than one bull as well as large groups of females.
The average price of the 29 Leehan stud bulls was R72 069. The average prices for females were as follows: in-calf cows R26 000, in-calf heifers R22 636, cows with calves R24 021, three-in-one cows R25 000 and open heifers R16 444.
Vleissentraal Bloemfontein hosted the auction in collaboration with SwiftVEE on 20 February at the company’s auction complex in Kimberley. Ian Grobbelaar was the auctioneer.
