This week’s AMT Fresh Produce Market Report by Dr Johann van der Merwe, Director of AMT.
Heavy rainfall is currently driving strong movements in fresh produce markets, with lower volumes supporting prices while demand is expected to increase further as we approach Easter.
Excessive rain is disrupting harvesting and logistics across key production regions, limiting supply to markets. At the same time, seasonal Easter demand is expected to pick up significantly, as higher consumer spending typically drives increased demand for fresh produce. This combination of constrained supply and stronger demand is likely to push prices higher in the short term – particularly for staple vegetables such as potatoes, onions, tomatoes and carrots.
While producers remain under pressure from rising fertiliser and fuel costs, these improving market conditions could offer some much-needed relief in the weeks ahead.
