Extremely well-adapted veld rams went under the hammer at the national Afrino auction, where 50 rams and 100 ewes were offered on the farm Klein Zuurfontein, Bethulie, on 10 February.

All the auction rams were part of the annual veld ram project on the farm Môreson, Bethulie, owned by Martiens le Roux, who has been presenting the project for 28 years. Le Roux says the sheep receive no supplementary feeding on the veld, and their wool and growth performance are carefully evaluated.
“About three years ago, we also began taking the animals’ worm egg counts, mucous membrane condition and overall condition score into account to deliver rams that can perform exclusively under veld conditions.”
Le Roux says he is pleased with the outcome of the auction, which was held on a day of torrential rain across parts of the Free State.
The most expensive ram from Le Roux was sold for R17 000 to De Ridder van Wyk of Van Kracht Afrino, Bloemfontein. The average price of the rams was R9 200.
BKB Cradock presented the auction, with JP Marais as auctioneer.
