OVK Livestock & Auctions, in collaboration with Central Saleyard, hosted a highly successful sixth production auction on 6 February on behalf of JP Potgieter’s Welpic Dormer stud.
By Gavin Isted
This marked the second year that the auction was held in the auction complex built by Potgieter on the farm Oudewoning in the Lady Grey district.
The average prices were as follows: pregnant ewes R5 673, ewes R2 366, ewes with lambs R6 625 and rams R9 144.
A ewe with twin lambs achieved the highest price of the day, selling for R18 000 to Danie Marais of Port Elizabeth.
The most expensive ram was sold for R16 000 to E. van Rooyen of Edenburg.
According to Potgieter, they have been breeding animals that make a difference in stud herds across South Africa for 13 years. The animals offered at the production auction are strictly selected to ensure that top-quality breeding material is available to both stud and commercial farmers.
He emphasises that the vision and mission of the stud are to make a meaningful contribution to the breed and to improve it as a whole. He also highlighted the importance of ensuring that buyers and clients are not only satisfied with the animals, but can also see the passion for the breed reflected in them.
Danie Strauss of Central Saleyard served as auctioneer.
