This week’s AMT Fresh Produce Market Report by Dr Johann van der Merwe, Director of AMT.
Rainfall in key production areas is starting to shake up the vegetable market, and prices are reacting. Last week, potatoes, tomatoes, carrots and peppers all moved higher, supported by lower volumes, good demand and wet conditions.
But on the fruit side, it’s a different story. Higher seasonal volumes are keeping prices for bananas, apples, oranges and avocados under pressure, while pears may edge slightly higher. Table grape prices could also rise sharply soon as the local season comes to an end. So, what should we expect this week?
🥔 Vegetables may stay firm in the short term.
🍅 Rain could keep prices elevated.
🧅 Onions remain high for now, but could ease from early to mid-June.
🍌 Fruit markets may remain softer as supply improves.
Watch the full update to see where prices are heading next and what it means for producers, buyers and consumers.
