Standard Bank has thrown down the gauntlet for township entrepreneurs across South Africa, announcing the return of its Kasi SME National Pitch Challenge – and the stakes have never been higher.

The bank confirmed that the 2026 edition of the competition is offering qualifying entrepreneurs from all nine South African provinces the opportunity to compete for provincial prizes and ultimately walk away with a grand prize of R1 million at the national finals later this year.
Applications Now Open – But the Clock Is Ticking
According to Standard Bank, the provincial round of applications opened on Wednesday, 6 May 2026, and will close on Friday, 22 May 2026. The bank is urging interested entrepreneurs not to delay, as the window is narrow and the opportunity is significant.
Interested SME entrepreneurs are directed to visit the Standard Bank Kasi SME Pitch Challenge platform to submit their applications before the deadline.

A Growing Platform for Township Business
The Pitch Challenge forms part of the broader Kasi SME Summit, which celebrates its 4th anniversary in 2026. Standard Bank describes the Summit as a vehicle designed to accelerate the commercialisation of SME enterprises and unlock meaningful market access pathways – equipping businesses with the tools, networks and platforms they need to scale sustainably.
The bank says the 2026 Summit sharpens its focus on connecting SME entrepreneurs to real economic opportunities, including corporate supply chains, retail partners, financiers, digital marketplaces and ecosystem enablers committed to inclusive growth.

How the Competition Works
Standard Bank has outlined a structured, multi-stage competition format:
- In each of the nine provinces, 10 entrepreneurs will be shortlisted to pitch their businesses to a panel of judges.
- From those, the top three will be selected per province.
- The provincial winner walks away with R50 000, while the first and second runners-up each receive R10 000.
- The nine provincial winners, together with one first runner-up, will form a Top 10 who will advance to the National Pitch Challenge
- At the national finals, one overall winner takes all – R1 million!
As part of their journey to the national stage, the Top 10 finalists will also gain access to a Standard Bank Enterprise and Supplier Development pitching masterclass, designed to sharpen their business models, storytelling and presentation skills ahead of the finals.
