Free State barefoot cattle farmer Zippo Lamprecht concluded the seventh production auction of his Bloodline Boran stud on 14 March with a 100% sale rate of his stud offering. Lamprecht has walked barefoot since he was young, but these days he puts on shoes when attending Boran events in Bloemfontein.
By Johan Norval
He started the Boran stud in 2004 as a 14-year-old and expanded his livestock enterprise with a Tuli stud on the farm Welkom in the Dewetsdorp district in 2021.
The 43 head of cattle and 84 straws of semen generated a turnover of R1,293 million.
The three bulls that were to be offered were withdrawn due to technical reasons.
The highest price was R65 000 for a pregnant cow (ZIP 210176), bought online by CP Marais for his Pro Beef Boran stud in East London.
Xolile Dasheka, a breeder from Johannesburg, acquired two females for R50 000 each – the most expensive non-pregnant heifer, ZIP 240048, and the most expensive cow with a calf, ZIP 220195. Dasheka operates his Boran stud at Imvelo Safari outside Bloemfontein.
The average price of stud cows (3-in-1s) was R48 000, pregnant stud cows R37 100, pregnant stud heifers R37 333 and non-pregnant stud heifers R41 000. The average price for commercial females was R17 214 for pregnant heifers and R18 000 for cows with a calf. The average price for the 84 semen straws was R435.
Vleissentraal Bloemfontein hosted the auction on the farm Welkom in collaboration with the online platform Meerkat. The auctioneer was Hennie Goosen.
