A pregnant Beefmaster cow (BOS 222181) and her calf fetched a remarkable R170 000 at the 76th production auction of the Bos Blanco stud of Dennis and Bernie Staal on 23 April.
By Johan Norval
The buyer was Maritz Wolfaardt of the Marnell stud at Hoopstad in the Free State.
This cow is a daughter of the renowned bull BOS 188495, whose semen achieved a record price of R20 000 per straw at the previous national Beefmaster auction.
The Staal brothers were able to present their auction at the Kroon Boma in Kroonstad because their animals had been vaccinated against foot-and-mouth disease.
After the auction, Dennis Staal expressed his satisfaction with the results, as well as his appreciation for Danie Rohlandt’s assistance with the arrangements.
Auctioneer Lukas Kleynhans of Vleissentraal attributed the 100% sale rate of the female offering to the loyal support of existing clients, as well as the participation of more than 40 buyers on the SwiftVEE platform.
He noted that the average price of R53 500 achieved for the 58 stud cows is strong in the context of current auction restrictions. The average price of the approximately 200 commercial female animals was R21 000.
