This week’s AMT Fresh Produce Market Report by Dr Johann van der Merwe, Director of AMT.
Vegetable markets are entering a very interesting phase. Volumes are starting to recover after the rain, while consumers are becoming more price-sensitive as higher fuel and living costs put pressure on household spending. At the same time, producers are also facing much higher production costs – meaning lower prices are placing serious pressure on profit margins.
In short: Consumers want relief, but producers can’t afford prices to fall too far. This week, AMT looks at where prices are under pressure, which products may still find support, and where the key risks and opportunities are in the fresh produce market.
