At Vleissentraal Port Elizabeth’s beef and store lamb auction, held on 7 April on the farm Oaklands at Springfontein, the average price of steers and slaughter bulls was R43,56/kg. This annual auction of H.E. Hugo generated a turnover of more than R6,884 million, with the support of the Meerkat platform and André van Zyl as auctioneer.

Meat prices at auctions following the Easter weekend maintained the averages of the previous two weeks, and in some cases were slightly higher.
According to the weekly auction prices of Vleissentraal in Bloemfontein on 25 March 2026, in the weight class of 321 kg–800 kg, the average price ranged from R32,97/kg to R46,68/kg, with the highest prices achieved for weaners. In the week of 18 March 2026, similar average prices were recorded, with light steers achieving an average of R48,33/kg.
At the Oaklands auction, the average price of heifers was R34,86/kg, in line with the price levels observed at the Bloemfontein auctions. However, heifers in the weight class of 140 kg–181 kg achieved the highest average price of R41,14/kg at the Bloemfontein auction of 18 March.
Oaklands’ 2 475 store lambs traded at an average of R50,24/kg. This included 750 mixed-breed store lambs weighing approximately 32 kg, which were sold at R1 600 per head.
In the week of 25 March 2026, a total of 286 cattle, 464 sheep, 139 goats, 83 pigs and 5 horses were traded at the Bloemfontein auction. Vleissentraal’s auction is held weekly in Bloemfontein at 11:00.
