The 23rd production auction of the Theres Bonsmara stud of Dr Kotie and Theresa Pienaar of the farm Wolvehuis between Orkney and Klerksdorp on 14 May was characterised by strong demand for female animals, while buyers from the area benefited from fair prices for quality stud bulls.

Auctioneer Steven Matthews of Karoo-Ochse Vryburg, who conducted the auction in collaboration with SwiftVEE, said the Pienaars’ loyal buyers who attended the auction were able to acquire breeding material originating from some of the industry’s leading stud herds.
The guest seller was Hendrik Brits of the Sciomanzi stud between Orkney and Leeudoringstad.
Wynand van der Merwe of Leeudoringstad purchased the two most expensive bulls at the auction. His highest bid of R135 000 secured the four-year-old bull THE 220007, while THE 220054 sold for R110 000.
The average price of the 23 stud bulls was R62 478,26.
Commercial cows with calves achieved an average price of R22 387, pregnant cows averaged R17 000, pregnant heifers averaged R17 250 and open heifers achieved an average of R13 875.
All 88 cattle offered at the auction were sold for a turnover of R2,651 million.
