We often talk about women supporting women. We celebrate mentorship, networking, sisterhood and the importance of opening doors for others. But this week I want to ask a different question. Did you ask?

Many women are waiting for an opportunity, a breakthrough or someone to notice their potential. They are waiting to be invited into the room, offered guidance or introduced to the right people. Yet too often, the very thing standing between them and their next opportunity is a simple but uncomfortable action: Asking.

Asking takes courage.

It means risking rejection. It means hearing “no”. It means putting yourself in a position where someone may ignore your email, decline your request or fail to return your call. For many people that possibility is enough to keep them silent.

But silence has never built a business. Silence has never secured funding. Silence has never created a partnership. Silence has never changed a life.

Throughout my career I have learned that opportunities rarely arrive wrapped in certainty. More often, they begin with a conversation, a question, a request for a meeting or a message sent despite the fear of being ignored.

Some of the most successful women I know did not get where they are because every door was opened for them. They got there because they knocked repeatedly. They asked for advice. They sought mentorship. They introduced themselves. They put their names forward. They were brave enough to hear “no” several times before hearing the “yes” that changed everything.

The truth is that many people are willing to help. They are willing to share knowledge, make introductions and offer guidance. But they cannot respond to a request that is never made.

Of course, not every answer will be positive. Some opportunities will pass you by. Some people will disappoint you. Some doors will remain firmly shut.

Ask anyway!

Because every unanswered email teaches persistence. Every rejection builds resilience. Every closed door pushes you towards a different entrance. And every courageous question brings you one step closer to the opportunity that was meant for you.

So, before you complain that nobody is helping you, ask yourself one honest question: “Did I ask?”

Because sometimes the difference between where you are and where you want to be is not a lack of opportunity but the courage to ask for it.
