North West vaccinates more than 772 000 animals in fight against FMD

The North West Department of Agriculture and Rural Development says it has made significant progress in its fight against foot-and-mouth disease (FMD), with more than 772 352 animals vaccinated across the province as part of an intensified disease control campaign.

According to the department, a total of 2 475 locations have been affected by FMD in North West, prompting an extensive response that includes vaccination, surveillance and biosecurity measures aimed at limiting the spread of the disease.

Farmers urged to remain vigilant

The department said vaccination teams, animal health technicians and veterinary officials remain active in affected areas while monitoring and preventive measures continue across the province.

Livestock owners have been urged to cooperate with vaccination teams and to adhere strictly to biosecurity protocols designed to protect herds and prevent further outbreaks.

The department also called on farmers to immediately report any suspected signs of FMD to their nearest state veterinarian, private veterinarian, animal health technician or extension officer. Officials stressed that early detection and rapid intervention remain critical in controlling outbreaks and protecting the livestock sector from further losses.

Sustaining the livestock industry

The department said the vaccination campaign forms part of a broader effort to safeguard animal health, support farming communities and ensure the long-term sustainability of the province’s livestock industry.

The department reiterated its commitment to tackling the disease through coordinated and evidence-based interventions while working closely with livestock owners and veterinary professionals throughout the province.

In a show of support for the campaign, North West MEC for Agriculture and Rural Development Madoda Sambatha has been actively involved in vaccination efforts, with the department describing his participation as a demonstration of government’s commitment to protecting livestock and farmer livelihoods.
