After months of speculation about his future in the portfolio, John Steenhuisen has been removed as Minister of Agriculture, with the Democratic Alliance announcing that Willie Aucamp will take over the position as part of a reshuffle of the party’s representatives in the Government of National Unity.

The announcement, made by DA leader Geordin Hill-Lewis on 17 June, ends weeks of uncertainty surrounding Steenhuisen’s position, particularly as the agriculture sector continues to grapple with the ongoing foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) crisis and its impact on livestock movement and export markets.
Steenhuisen credited for market access and FMD response
Steenhuisen, who became Minister of Agriculture following the formation of the GNU in 2024, oversaw efforts to expand market access for South African agricultural products and led government interventions aimed at improving the procurement and distribution of FMD vaccines.
In a statement announcing the changes, Hill-Lewis praised Steenhuisen’s contribution to the department, highlighting progress made in opening new export opportunities and responding to animal disease outbreaks. However, the DA leader indicated that the party believes the new team will strengthen its contribution to government and better reflect the mandate received from voters.

Aucamp’s immediate focus: FMD crisis
Aucamp’s immediate task will be to tackle the ongoing FMD crisis. According to Hill-Lewis, the incoming minister has been mandated to resolve ongoing legal proceedings related to the disease, work with industry stakeholders to restore confidence in South Africa’s animal health system, and accelerate practical measures to bring the outbreak under control.
The new minister will also be expected to continue efforts to secure additional export markets for South African agricultural products, a key priority for a sector seeking growth amid difficult economic conditions.
Steenhuisen moves to trade and industry
Steenhuisen will remain in government, moving to the Department of Trade, Industry and Competition as Deputy Minister, where he is expected to focus on market access, industrial growth and job creation.
The reshuffle also sees David Maynier appointed Minister of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment, while Alexandra Abrahams moves to Deputy Minister of Electricity and Energy.
