An exceptional average price of R205 897 for bulls was the standout feature of the annual Hartebeestloop Bonsmara auction held on 23 May at Stampriet in Namibia.
This excellent average price for the 41 bulls offered at Dr Joggie and Eugenie Briedenhann’s production auction was driven in particular by three bulls that sold for R650 000, R600 000 and R450 000 respectively.
Sandveld Bonsmaras of Makoba in Botswana purchased the bulls HART 22-0485 for R650 000 and HART 22-0120 for R600 000. The stud has been acquiring top breeding material from the Briedenhanns for some time as part of its ongoing genetic improvement programme.
Kobus and Nelia Engelbrecht, owners of the Endelela Bonsmara Stud near Otjiwarongo in Namibia, purchased the third most expensive bull, HART 21-0018, for R450 000.
Female animals also performed well. A total of 15 heifers were sold at an average price of R20 400, while 87 pregnant heifers achieved an average of R29 816 and 34 cows with calves at foot averaged R30 088.
The 136 Bonsmaras offered at the auction achieved an overall average price of R28 846.
Agra hosted the auction and the auctioneer was Deon Klopper.
The Hartebeestloop farm in southern Namibia is situated in the Kalahari Desert, where the Bonsmaras are raised on duneveld. Briedenhann has for many years focused on the use of genomics, a scientific tool that contributes to more accurate selection and breeding decisions.
He was named Breedplan Southern African Stud Breeder of the Year in 2017.
