The annual production auction of the Magetzane SA Mutton Merino stud once again enjoyed strong support this year, with buyers showing keen interest in the breeding material of Rowlen von Gericke
From the outset it was evident that the day would be a successful one. Attendance was strong and demand for the animals exceeded expectations – a sign of the market’s confidence in Von Gericke’s breeding programme.
A total of 40 rams went under the hammer and achieved an average price of R14 100.
What made this result particularly noteworthy was that 22 of the 40 rams were still ram lambs. Despite their age, they traded strongly throughout the auction and held their own against the older rams.
Thirty stud ewes were also sold at an average price of R4 748.
The top-priced animal of the day was ram 4242 RVG, which sold for R28 000 to Paul Johan le Roux of Kroonstad.
Vleissentraal Bloemfontein hosted the auction on 3 June at Von Gericke’s farm, Gertruidasrust, near Marquard. Allan Sinclair served as auctioneer.
