I have found myself reflecting on a question that is both simple and deeply uncomfortable: When last did you intentionally help another woman without expecting anything in return? Not because she could introduce you to influential people. Not because she had the power to advance your career or grow your business. Not because helping her would somehow benefit you. Simply because she needed someone to believe in her.

We speak often about empowering women. We organise conferences, celebrate Women’s Month, recognise achievements and fill social media with messages of encouragement. While all of these have their place, true empowerment is rarely found in grand gestures alone. It is found in the quiet moments that few people ever witness. It is recommending another woman’s business when your own could have taken the opportunity. It is making an introduction that changes someone’s future. It is sharing knowledge without worrying that someone else might become better than you. It is answering the phone when another woman feels like giving up. Sometimes, empowerment is simply looking another woman in the eye and saying, “I believe in you.”
Somewhere along the way, many of us were taught there is only room for one woman at the top. That another woman’s success somehow threatens our own. That influence should be protected instead of shared. I have come to believe this is one of the greatest lies we have accepted. Success is not a limited resource. Opportunity is not something that becomes smaller every time another woman receives it. In fact, the strongest and most influential women I have met throughout my journey all have one thing in common: They are generous with opportunity. They make introductions. They recommend others for projects. They celebrate another woman’s success without comparison. They understand that confidence grows through collaboration, not competition.

Real leadership is not measured by the number of people who know your name. It is measured by the number of people whose lives are better because they crossed your path. Imagine what our industries, our communities and our country would look like if every successful woman intentionally reached back for just one more woman every month. Imagine if every commercial farmer mentored an emerging farmer. Imagine if every business leader opened one meaningful door instead of guarding it. Imagine if every woman committed herself to changing just one other woman’s story. The ripple effect would be extraordinary. Businesses would grow stronger. Families would become more resilient. Communities would thrive. Entire generations would inherit opportunities that may never have existed otherwise.

Perhaps that is the kind of legacy truly worth leaving. Not the titles after our names. Not the awards on our shelves. Not the followers on our social media platforms. But the women who can confidently say, “I am where I am today because someone chose to help me when they had absolutely nothing to gain.” Those are the stories that outlive careers. Those are the investments that continue paying dividends long after we are gone.
I hope we’ll challenge ourselves to redefine what success really means. Success should never be measured only by how high we climb, but by how many hands we reached back to hold. Our greatest achievement may never be the businesses we built, the positions we held or the recognition we received. It may very well be the confidence we restored, the dreams we reignited and the women who found the courage to keep going because we chose kindness over recognition, generosity over self-interest and collaboration over competition.
So, I leave you with one final question: Who is stronger today because you chose to help her? Because in the end, the women who change the world are not remembered only for what they achieved. They are remembered for how many other women they lifted with them.
