A group of emerging breeders joined forces on 20 May to offer quality meat goats in the central Free State.

The Free State Boktelers Group was established in 2025 following an information day hosted by Jacques Potgieter (JUP Boerbok Stud, Winburg) and Jannes du Toit (Rusha Boerbok Stud, Senekal) at the Winburg Farmers’ Association auction facilities.
The six other members of the group who offered animals at the auction were Albert van Zyl (Soetdoring Boerbokke, Swartruggens), Wimpie Botha (Viljé Boerbokke, Hennenman), Telana Otto (Anana Kalahari Reds, Bultfontein), Mariaan du Toit (Mariaan du Toit Boerbok Stud, Dewetsdorp), Ferdi Jordaan (Fermar Kalahari Reds, Welkom) and Johan Lindeque (Grato Boerbokke, Bethlehem).
Elrize Alberts, a relative newcomer to livestock marketing from Vryburg in the North West, presented the auction.
Alberts said before the sale that she and the Free State Boktelers Group were looking forward to the group’s first production auction in Winburg with great anticipation.
“This dynamic group of breeders came together after recognising the increasing demand for quality meat goats in the Free State. The group consists of dedicated stud breeders who focus on breeding Boer goats, Savannas and Kalahari Reds, and combines established names with newer breeders who bring energy and passion to the industry,” she says.
The auction was held under the auspices of the South African Boer Goat Breeders’ Association, which helps ensure high quality standards.
“Strict biosecurity measures were implemented on the breeders’ farms and maintained throughout the auction.”
The most expensive meat goat sold at the auction was a Savanna ewe with her lamb, which realised R24 000. The ewe originates from the breeding lines of the well-known Koenie Kotzé of Niekershoop and the Maize Valley stud of Andrew and Ju-mari Roberts of Hoopstad.
The sellers were Christiaan and Cecile Labuschagne of Hakuna Matata, Hoopstad, while the buyer was Conradie Farm of Bronkhorstspruit.
The average prices achieved were R6 778 for pregnant Boer goat ewes, R8 056 for open Boer goat ewes, R14 875 for Boer goat rams, R6 375 for Kalahari Red ewes and R12 000 for Kalahari Red rams.
The prices achieved by individual animals at the auction were as follows:
- Savanna ram – R15 000
- Boer goat ewe with lamb – R19 000
- Open Boer goat ewe – R9 000
- Pregnant Kalahari Red ewe – R10 000
- Open Kalahari Red ewe – R5 500
The auction was presented by Elrize Alberts Livestock Marketing in collaboration with the Meerkat platform. Henico Alberts served as auctioneer.
