“That’s a nice, fat bull” and “That’s a bargain, sir!” … Words flowed freely at the 21st auction of Poggenpoel Molopo Bonsmaras, presented by Noordkaap Livestock on 26 May at Stella in the North West.

This time, however, it was not merely the persuasive talk of auctioneer Johan van der Nest. There were indeed many bargains on offer.
The top-priced bull, lot 8, sold for R350 000, while lot 90 achieved R280 000.
“We sold all 82 bulls that were offered at an average price of R102 530. We are very grateful for that and for the grace of God because, despite difficult times and circumstances, the auction still went very well,” says Phillip Poggenpoel of Poggenpoel Molopo Bonsmaras.
“In the case of lot 8 and lot 90, both the phenotype and genotype were particularly impressive. Lot 8 has balanced figures and a good birth-to-weaning weight ratio. Lot 90 also has excellent figures, while its fertility value, cow value and longevity value are all strong. The profit that the new owner will derive from his cows in future is very promising. Its fertility value is 124 and it also has a favourable birth-to-weaning weight ratio,” says Kobus Poggenpoel jr. of Poggenpoel Molopo Bonsmaras.
Jaco and Andri Botha of Murasie Boerderye near Ottosdal in the North West purchased both lot 8 and lot 90 and are highly satisfied with their acquisitions.
“We have been buying bulls from the Poggenpoels for 21 years and are always satisfied with our purchases. These are quality bulls that have consistently been profitable for us,” says Jaco.
“We always ensure that we buy the most productive bulls. About once a year we also add more expensive bulls to our herd to improve our top-performing cattle even further. The two bulls’ weaning weight, weaning percentage and growth figures were very good. We operate a feedlot and feed business and therefore productivity is important to us. We are very pleased with today’s purchases,” says Jaco.
Gert Jordaan, CEO of Noordkaap Livestock, congratulated the Poggenpoels on a successful auction.
“Considering the challenges that the cattle industry has faced over the past few years and the circumstances of which we are all aware, the average price achieved by these bulls was particularly impressive. This can be attributed to years of selection and breeding with proven genetics. The Poggenpoels are known for producing top-quality animals,” says Jordaan.
Ten stud females and 50 commercial females were also sold at the auction.
All the animals offered had already been vaccinated against foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) and were presented in excellent condition.
