Napier grass (Cenchrus purpureum) is gaining attention as a promising alternative forage crop for South African livestock farmers. Known for its rapid growth, high biomass production and relatively high protein content, this perennial tropical grass can provide quality forage for up to eight years once established. While it offers significant benefits for ruminant production, its successful adoption depends on proper management and overcoming several production challenges.

A high-yielding perennial forage
Napier grass is one of the most productive perennial forage grasses available for livestock feeding. It grows rapidly, produces large quantities of biomass and provides continuous green forage under suitable conditions. These characteristics make it an attractive feed source for beef and dairy producers seeking to improve forage availability throughout the growing season.

Climate, soil and water requirements
Napier grass performs best in warm tropical and subtropical climates with full sunlight, requiring at least six hours of direct sunlight daily. Although relatively drought tolerant compared with many forage crops, it remains sensitive to frost and prolonged cold conditions.
The grass grows well across a wide range of soil types but performs best in deep, fertile, well-drained soils. Annual rainfall of approximately 750 mm to 2 500 mm, or supplementary irrigation, is required for optimal production. Waterlogged conditions should be avoided, as prolonged saturation can severely reduce growth and plant survival.
Propagation and Establishment
Unlike many pasture grasses, Napier grass is established vegetatively using stem cuttings rather than seed.
Stem cuttings should be taken from healthy, mature plants and measure between 30 cm and 45 cm in length. At least two nodes should be inserted into the soil at an angle of approximately 45 degrees to encourage rooting. A row spacing of about 60 cm is recommended.
Applying cattle manure or compost during planting improves soil fertility, moisture retention and biomass production. Many farmers use the “Tumbikiza” method, where manure is placed in planting furrows before inserting the cuttings. Good weed control during the establishment phase is essential to reduce competition.
The first harvest is generally possible three to four months after planting, depending on rainfall and growing conditions. Thereafter, harvesting every six to eight weeks maintains forage quality. The grass should ideally be cut when it reaches a height of 60 cm to 90 cm, leaving a stubble height of 5 cm to 10 cm to encourage rapid regrowth.
Napier grass can be utilised through direct grazing, cut-and-carry systems, hay production or silage, making it a versatile forage option.

Nutritional value depends on harvest timing
Napier grass produces exceptional quantities of forage, but maintaining nutritional quality requires timely harvesting.
As plants mature, stems become more fibrous and less digestible, while the proportion of nutritious leaves declines. Consequently, crude protein levels can decrease to approximately 70 g/kg to 100 g/kg of dry matter in mature stands.
Livestock fed only mature Napier grass may experience reduced milk and meat production unless the forage is supplemented with higher-quality feeds such as legumes or energy-rich concentrates.
Managing drought and feed conservation
Although resilient, Napier grass still requires adequate moisture to achieve maximum yields. During prolonged droughts, forage production declines substantially, particularly where irrigation is unavailable.
Preserving surplus forage as silage offers an important strategy for maintaining feed supplies during dry periods. However, many smallholder farmers face difficulties producing high-quality silage because of inadequate sealing techniques and limited access to additives such as molasses or bacterial inoculants. These challenges often result in poor-quality silage and reduced feed value.

Challenges limiting wider adoption
South Africa currently has two main Napier grass cultivars: Bana and Super Napier (Juncoa).
Despite their high biomass production and perennial growth habit, several challenges limit wider adoption, particularly among emerging farmers. These include:
- High water requirements for maximum production.
- Dependence on vegetative propagation.
- Hard, hairy leaves that may cause discomfort or injury during direct grazing.
- High labour requirements.
- The need for specialised machinery to chop forage for silage production.
- Rapid decline in forage quality if harvesting is delayed.
These factors often require producers to supplement animals with additional feeds to maintain production, increasing overall feeding costs.

Future research will be key
Napier grass has considerable potential to strengthen South Africa’s livestock feed base, but further research is needed to make production more practical and affordable for farmers.
Future studies should focus on improving water-use efficiency, optimising harvesting schedules, enhancing forage conservation methods and reducing labour and production costs. Addressing these challenges will help make this high-yielding perennial forage a more accessible and sustainable option for both commercial and emerging livestock producers.
