More than one million cattle have been vaccinated against foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) by the North West Department of Agriculture and Rural Development. This marks a significant milestone in the province’s efforts to contain the outbreak and protect its livestock industry.

As of 19 July 2026, veterinary teams had vaccinated 1 032 615 cattle, representing about 74% of the province’s estimated cattle population. The province is now aiming to reach 80% vaccination coverage by the end of August, a level regarded as critical for establishing herd immunity against the disease.
The mass vaccination programme began in early March as part of South Africa’s national FMD intervention and has positioned North West among the country’s leading provinces in implementing the campaign.

Veterinary teams praised
Madoda Sambatha, North West MEC for Agriculture and Rural Development, credited the achievement to the dedication of veterinary professionals, animal health technicians and support teams who have been working across all four districts of the province.
He said vaccinating more than one million cattle demonstrates the commitment and professionalism of the provincial veterinary services.

Campaign far from over
Despite reaching the one-million mark, Sambatha warned the campaign is entering one of its most important phases and urged farmers not to become complacent.
He stressed that once the first round of vaccinations has been completed, veterinary teams will return to administer the required second dose, which is essential to ensure full protection against the disease.
Farmers urged to maintain biosecurity
Livestock farmers have been encouraged to continue presenting all eligible cattle for vaccination while maintaining strict biosecurity measures on their farms.
