Stellenbosch University held its 50th production auction at the Mariendahl Experimental Farm at Elsenburg, outside Stellenbosch, on Thursday, 23 June. The auction also marked a milestone for John Morris, manager of Mariendahl, who has been at the farm for 40 years.

A total of 65 AA and A Dohne Merino rams and 25 SA Mutton Merino rams were offered at the auction.
The highest-priced Dohne Merino ram was Lot 11, which sold for R29 000. The buyer was Erick Carstens, on behalf of Laastedrift Agri outside Ceres.
The highest-priced SA Mutton Merino ram was Lot 79, which realised R20 000 and was purchased by Berkeley Graaff of De Grendel Estate.
The Dohne Merino rams achieved an average price of R15 666.67, with a 100% clearance rate, while the SA Mutton Merino rams achieved an average price of R10 933.33.

An exceptional herd
“There was an incredible atmosphere today because it was such a big milestone for John and for Stellenbosch University,” said Tjaart Steyn, the BKB auctioneer, who added it was difficult to improve year after year when the animals were already of such a high standard. “John’s animals have outstanding wool across the board, and that is characteristic of his herd.”
The milestone celebrated both the genetics and the people behind the farmer’s success., said Corné Nel, manager of BKB Fibre’s Western Region, who attended the auction. “John’s work has made a lasting difference to students, producers and breeders across South Africa.”

A rare occasion
“Auction day is nicer than my birthday,” exclaimed Morris, who explained although the purpose of the experimental farm is to conduct research and provide training, it must still be run on a commercial basis.
“It’s really nice to see men who have been buying from us for years.” For Morris one of the highlights of the auction was seeing the number of stud breeders who attended the event and to have been involved in the auction for 39 years.
