Great interest and good prices characterised Deale Bovelders of Cronjé and Shirley Deale’s annual production auction on 22 July. The auction was held at Madeira, the Deales’ farm at Vrede. Charfontein Farming of Andries and Neels Greyling, also from Vrede, was the guest seller.

A total of 95 bulls were offered and achieved an average price of R117 200. The two most expensive bulls of the day were lot 8 (DB220901), which sold for R800 000, and lot 10 (DB231071), which sold for R550 000. The joint buyers of the bulls were Whiterocks Bovelders (Erhard Breet, Nottingham Road, KZN), Hirsaw Livestock (Dewald te Water and Jeanette Janse van Rensburg, Bethal, Mpumalanga), Highland Farms (Erika van Niekerk, Harrismith, Free State), Val Grain Co (Norman and Monty Kerslake, Val, Mpumalanga), Morgental Bovelders (Shaun de Jager, Dundee, KZN), Platberg Agri (Jan-Willem Lotz, Amersfoort, Mpumalanga), Rietvallei Boerdery (Bertus Burgers, Wakkerstroom, Mpumalanga) and Knostrope Bovelders (Jan Meyer, Dundee).
The eight buyers saw the potential early on and together assessed the merits of the top-priced bull.
Of the 95 bulls, 51 were sold for R90 000 or less, reflecting the wide market interest and the different buyer segments represented at the auction.
The females also attracted great attention. The 245 pregnant cows fetched an average price of R26 100, while the 30 cows with calves sold for an average of R26 600.
The results confirm the strong demand for quality Bovelder breeding material and reflect the continued emphasis of Deale Bovelders and Charfontein Boerdery on genetic progress and productive animals.
Pam Fyvie, who attended the auction to support her fellow Bovelder breeders, says it is “phenomenal” to offer 95 bulls at auction.
Buyers such as Bertus van Zyl of Reitz and Oubaas Meiring of Petrus Steyn made special trips to ensure they did not miss out on these excellent animals.
GP Deale, who farms with his father, says he enjoys every aspect of the industry. For him, the biggest challenge is to attract buyers to the auction year after year, maintain their trust and ensure they remain satisfied with their purchases. He also emphasises that consistency is the key to sustainable success: maintaining the same high standard year after year while preserving the trust built with buyers. The biggest lesson he learned from his father, he sums up simply: “Do a thing properly, or leave it.”
BKB Frankfort presented the auction. The auctioneer was Jan Mostert.
