The Boshoff family’s focus on genomics to accelerate genetic progress in their herd contributed to the success of their production auction on 24 June. The entire bull offering was sold at an average price of R84 808.

Jan Boshoff, his son Chris and son-in-law Barry Hertzog are committed to breeding superior Bonsmara cattle. Chris established the Boshoff Bonsmaras stud in 2013, while Hertzog manages the Janretha and Boshoff Bonsmaras stud herds.
All the stud’s SP bulls are genomically tested to confirm the polled gene, eliminating guesswork and ensuring proven genetics for producing naturally hornless cattle.
Lot 8 (JHL 220071) was the top-priced bull at R160 000. Peter Mockford and his sons, Bradley and Shaun, of Mockford Farms near Polokwane in Limpopo purchased the bull for their Bonsmara stud because it offered outstanding breeding values for genetic herd improvement.
Several loyal clients purchased more than one bull, reflecting continued confidence in the Boshoff genetics.
Average prices were R19 000 for commercial cows with calves, R18 750 for commercial pregnant heifers, R19 000 for pregnant Bonsmara heifers and R15 000 for open Bonsmara heifers.
The auction was presented by BKB in collaboration with the Meerkat platform on Brakfontein farm between Leandra and Delmas. Billy Lyons was the auctioneer.
