A bull is one of the biggest investments a cattle farmer will make. But how do you know the one you are buying is worth the money – and will deliver on what you need?
Ernest Makua, livestock technical advisor at Red Meat Industry Services (RMIS), walks farmers through the key physical traits to check when selecting a bull – from neck and chest to sheath and soundness. Because a single quality bull can serve at least 25 females, getting your selection right is critical for a profitable and sustainable enterprise. He spoke to Maile Matsimela at the Sernick Emerging Market Farmers Day in Edenville, Free State.
