Strong demand for Bovelder genetics saw every animal offered at the Fyvie Farming and Strydhoek Boerdery auction sold, with the top bull fetching R400 000.

Strong demand for hardy, functional Bovelder breeding stock characterised the joint production auction of Fyvie Farming and Strydhoek Boerdery on 17 July. Both are established Bovelder breeders in the Harrismith district, focusing on breeding productive beef cattle through strict selection and sound management.
The Bovelder is a popular choice among South African farmers because of its adaptability, hardiness and excellent meat production. The breed is renowned for its fertility, good growth rates and ability to perform well under a wide range of climatic conditions.
The auction, held on the farm Deveron near Harrismith, achieved a 100% sales rate, with every animal on offer sold.
Fyvie Farming, owned by Neil and Pam Fyvie, sold the top-priced bull of the day. Lot 9 was purchased for R400 000 by Kobus de Jager of Strydhoek Boerdery and Piet Potgieter of Paardenkop Bovelders near Vrede. Strydhoek Boerdery’s top-priced bull, lot 2, was sold to Derek Botha of Grootvlei, Mpumalanga, for R180 000.
The 25 bulls sold for an average of R129 600, while the 83 pregnant cows averaged R21 800 and the 61 open heifers averaged R13 000.
Bulls were offered across a range of price categories, ensuring buyers could acquire quality Bovelder breeding stock to suit their budgets. Six bulls sold for between R60 000 and R80 000, 12 for between R90 000 and R120 000, four for between R140 000 and R190 000, and three for between R300 000 and R400 000.
The auction was presented by BKB Bethlehem in collaboration with SwiftVEE, with Jan Mostert serving as auctioneer.
