Disco Bonsmaras’ 10th production auction achieved a 100% sale rate, with the top bull selling for R250 000 and stud bulls averaging R88 333.

Breeding stock from some of South Africa’s leading Bonsmara herds was available at affordable prices at the tenth production auction of Boeram Venter’s Disco Bonsmaras at Kirkwood in the Eastern Cape. The 15 three-year-old bulls were bred from genetics from, among others, the Up George stud of Derek and Tutu Ralfe of Wasbank, KwaZulu-Natal, and Fourie and Sanet Scheepers’ Zinabos stud at Fouriesburg.
The auction was a great success, achieving a 100% sale rate and a turnover of more than R2 million.
Venter, a former pharmacist, and his two sons, Nico and Leroux, farm on three properties in the Coerney Valley in the Eastern Cape. Their main enterprise is approximately 430 ha of citrus, with lemons being the largest crop. They also diversify into Boer goats, broiler chickens, a Bonsmara stud, game, compost production and tourism. Boeram was named Eastern Cape Farmer of the Year in 2013.
The top-priced bull, VJN 230044, was sold for R250 000 to Chris Welman of Erasmia Farm near Bultfontein. The second most expensive bull, Lot 14 (VJN 230049), was sold for R140 000 to Surika du Plessis of Kliphard Farm at Hennopsrivier. The stud bulls achieved an average price of R88 333.
Commercial cows with calves achieved an average price of R24 275, while pregnant commercial cows averaged R21 300. Commercial cows achieved an average of R18 000 and open commercial heifers averaged R15 556.
