Cape Lob Ear goats performed best at the Indigenous Veld Goat Society’s (IVG) tenth Livestock Carnival auction, held on 10 July at the Fire & Wine Centre in Pretoria. Three indigenous veld goat ecotypes were offered: Cape Lob Ears, Cape Speckled and Mbuzi’s.

A total of 67 Cape Lob Ear goats generated a turnover of R529 500, contributing to the auction’s total turnover of almost R1,24 million. A total of 67% of the turnover was achieved online through Corné du Plessis’ CdP auction service platform.
The top-priced goat at the auction was lot 91, XAN 23053, a Cape Lob Ear ewe with her ewe lamb from Alexander Bissett of the Xandorr stud on the farm Clifton near Boshof. She was sold for R75 000 to Xander and Belinda Human of Vrederus farm near Riversdale. The lamb was sired by Game Changer.
Bissett also sold the top-priced Cape Lob Ear ram. Anton van Zyl of the Sine Metu farm near Swartruggens paid R55 000 for the stud sire Warzone (XAN 23059). Warzone is a son of Oorlog, which sold for R160 000 at the same auction in 2025.
Gerhard Lourens, one of the IVG’s most active members, sold his top-priced Cape Lob Ear ewe, Apache, from his LGL stud at Waterval north of Pretoria for R11 000 to Willem van Heerden of Wilmeg near Wesselsbron. “Willem says he is looking forward to establishing this genetic material in his herd and hopes to breed animals from her with the same exceptional posture and horns,” says Lourens.

Cape Lob Ears:
- Ewes: R12 955
- Ewes with a lamb: R22 700
- Pregnant ewes: R9 044
- Rams: R19 167
Cape Speckled:
- Ewes: R4 500
- 3-in-1 ewes: R6 000
- 5-in-1 ewes: R4 000
- Pregnant ewes: R5 636
Mbuzis:
- Ewes: R2 430
- Ewes with a lamb: R4 275
- Pregnant ewes: R2 646.
