The first joint Vastrap Dormer auction, held on 8 August at the Afridome in Parys, featured a strong offering of quality breeding material.

Johnny Forbes of Vredesig Dormers and Suffolks near Darling, Andrew Jordaan and Seuns’ Top 3 Dormers near Cradock, and JP Potgieter of Welpic Dormers near Lady Grey joined forces for the auction. Buyers travelled from as far afield as Bultfontein and Volksrust to attend.
Two Dormer rams achieved the top price of R22 500 each. Lot 10 (JP25117) of Welpic Dormers was sold to Moll Trust of Volksrust, while lot 11 (VS24500) of Vredesig Dormers and Suffolks was bought by Jano Earle of Bultfontein.
The Dormers achieved the following average prices: rams, R13 800; pregnant SP ewes, R6 390; open SP ewes, R5 000; pregnant commercial ewes, R5 200; and open commercial ewes, R3 500.
The Suffolk animals also achieved good prices, with an average of R12 375 for rams and R9 400 for ewes.
Madelaine Moll of Volksrust, Mpumalanga, says they are always looking for breeding material that can make a difference in their flocks. Because Dormers are not widely available in their area, they appreciate the opportunity to access top-quality rams through online auctions. Good breeding stock is crucial to further improving the quality of their herd.
According to Jano Earle, he uses the stud rams he purchases in his commercial flock because of their fertility, good weaning rates and reproductive performance.
The auction was presented by BKB Frankfort, with Jan Mostert as auctioneer.
