The pregnant Dexter cow Minimoo Connie (FH 210015) fetched the highest price of R38 500. She was bred by Frank Hinze of the Minimoo stud at Howick, KwaZulu-Natal, and bought by Jodi James of the On-Track-Dexters stud.
Hinze also exhibited the senior champion bull, Minimoo Alan, at the club show held on 23 July.
The senior champion cow, Tori Raine Sandy, bred and owned by Moira Hampton of Nylstroom, Modimolle, was named breed champion at the show. Hampton is known for her champion Dexters, including the national senior and grand champion cow OP 150008, which she exhibited at the Willem Prinsloo Museum in Pretoria in 2022. The reserve breed champion was the junior champion bull Dexico, bred by Tian and Stefani Botha of Dexico Dexters. The reserve senior champion bull, Tori Raine Bewis, was also exhibited by Hampton.
The most expensive bull was lot 5 (JD 210100) from Retha and Jaco Oosthuizen, which sold for R37 500 to Bosparadys Dairy at Hartbeespoortdam. The average price of the bulls was R27 125, cows with a calf R18 687, pregnant cows R17 136, 3-in-1 cows R18 750, pregnant heifers R15 500 and open heifers R7 000. The average price of ox weaners was R8 194.
Johan Jordaan of Karibu Stud, chairman of the Overvaal club, says the quality of the auction animals was excellent. He says the Overvaal club is doing well and attracts members from Mpumalanga, North West and KwaZulu-Natal. A total of 40 cattle were entered in the show, despite the threat of foot-and-mouth disease still hanging over the cattle industry.
The auction was presented by BKB Ermelo, with Jan-Hendrik Breytenbach as the auctioneer.
