The most expensive ram, 4215 LW, bred by Koos de Wet of The Lands, Graaff-Reinet, achieved R21 000. De Wet is a breeder of champion Mutton Merinos that are exhibited at various shows and achieve top prices at auctions.
A pregnant ewe from De Wet was the most expensive female animal at the South African Mutton Merino Breeders’ Society’s national auction in Bloemfontein in 2025, selling for R8 000.
He also exhibited, among others, the junior and senior champion ram at the Eastern Cape SA Mutton Merino Championship Show at the Cradock Show in 2024, as well as the senior champion wool ram and the champion group of three rams.
The buyer of the most expensive ram was Henlo Fourie of Petrus Steyn. Fourie regularly participates as both a buyer and seller at national and regional auctions. The 41 rams sold at the auction averaged R12 805.
The auction was hosted by Vleissentraal Frankfort at the town’s auction centre, with Ian Grobbelaar as auctioneer.
