The 13th Trio SA Meat Merino production auction was held on 2 September at the Petrus Steyn Golf Club in Petrus Steyn in the Free State. The sellers were Jan and Thomas Uys (Marnesdacht, Steynsrus), Bennie de Beer (LOK SAVM, Tweeling), Manie van Niekerk (Geluk SAVM, Kroonstad) and Jan Harm Bosch (Bolami SAVM, Steynsrus).
The auction once again placed the emphasis on top-quality SA Meat Merinos. The animals were of excellent quality and gave buyers the opportunity to purchase valuable genetic material for their herds.
Although market conditions are difficult, loyal supporters play an important role. Their continued interest and support showed that good relationships and trust still play an important role in the industry.
A total of 40 rams, 280 store lambs, 50 pregnant ewes and 70 ewes that has been mated were offered. The guest sellers, who offered the ewes and lambs, were Lona Mentz of Petrus Steyn, Christiaan Bredell of Kroonstad, Jan Snyman of Reitz and Reynard Lennox of Mable Hall.
The average prices at the auction reflected good interest. Pregnant ewes achieved an average price of R3 440, while ewes averaged R2 366 and rams an impressive R13 033.
The most expensive ram of the day was ram 5062 GU (lot 22) from Jan and Thomas Uys, which sold for an impressive R33 000. The ram was purchased by Jan Snyman of Reitz. Snyman knew exactly which ram he wanted and did not hesitate to pay the price to obtain this exceptional ram.
One of the buyers, Andrea Briel of Reitz, said they support the auction every year and are very pleased with the quality of the animals.
OVK Livestock and Auctioneers presented the auction, and auctioneer Gareth Hughes and his team handled it with great professionalism and expertise, ensuring that everything ran smoothly.
