More than 3 000 people in Sinazongwe in Southern Province have received relief maize following heavy rain which destroyed their crops.
Sinazongwe district commissioner Protacio Mulenga said the Food Reserve Agency (FRA) made maize available at discounted prices to help those affected.
“We have put measures in place to ensure people affected by last month’s floods are protected from starving. FRA has offloaded some its maize reserves with a 50kg bag of maize going for K135,” Mulenga said.
Heavy rain last month washed away 3 500 hectares of maize fields and forced some people to flee to higher ground. The rain also damaged roads, bridges, clinics and schools.
The district administration called on the Disaster Management and Mitigation Unit (DMMU) for help. The Zambia Meteorological Department said many parts of Zambia received significant rain. Areas include Southern Province, Western Province, Muchinga and Northern Province.
